“We intend to be good neighbors,” says Monmouth University
President Paul G. Gaffney II in reference to University-Community relations. The
response was to a question about how dealing with West Long Branch residents as
president of Monmouth University (MU) compared to negotiating with the Chinese
during his time in the Navy.
After an April 2001 mid-air collision between a U.S. Navy EP-3E
spy plane and a Chinese fighter off China’s southern shore, Gaffney, then a Navy
vice admiral, was sent to Beijing in early 2002 as the first step in restoring
U.S.-China relations.
